So, what exactly is cork?

Cork is harvested from a specific oak tree - Quercus Suber.

Cork harvesting is one of the best examples of a sustainable agro-forestry system - it's an eco-friendly process:
The first harvesting of cork takes place when the Cork Oak is 25 years old, and without any damage to the tree. Later harvesting of cork is made only every nine years.

Only after the third harvesting, when the tree is 40 years old, is it possible to obtain the necessary quality for production of natural cork sheets, which is the basis for most products made of cork.

The Cork Oak lives a long life, on average more than 200 years. Actually, it is illegal to cut down healthy cork oak trees in Portugal, without a licence.

Cork is thus a natural product, a renewable resource.  Cork is 100% natural, biodegradable.  Products made of cork are truly environmentally friendly products.

Portugal has more than 32% of the Cork Oaks in the world, and is handling 70% of the world’s cork production. Portugal is the largest exporter of cork in the world and a pioneer in the use of this material in the creation of various articles.
